Update on my word of the year 2018 “Respect”
“And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their faces to the earth, and lick the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am Jehovah; and they that wait for me shall not be put to shame.”
Isaiah 49:23 ASV

This verse is from one of my daily devotions. The above verse, the last phrase spoke to me. He will not put us to shame if we wait on Him. I have a tendency to think that if God tells me something and it doesn’t happen right away, it’s giving Him a bad name. Not so! I also take things too personally. I tend to react to people instead of keeping a healthy distance.
This, I think, is why I tend to have a problem with the respect word of the year. To clear up any confusion, I am a very respectful person. What I’m struggling with is the deep respect that our world, our current generation would classify as weak, and maybe even offensive. The religious people of our current day may see this respect as compromising.
There are several stories through out the Bible that talks about respect. Including Jesus, how He taught respect for who we consider the enemy. I’m no expert, but I have to wonder if our world has deteriorated because of disrespect.
Not to get political, and staying on neutral ground, what about our elected officials? Do they get the respect because of their status? Not in today’s world. And men? Older individuals? Women? Where is the respect?
So I come back full circle to myself. When I’m accused, belittled, or brushed off by a fellow human being, no matter who they are, do I respond with respect? Or do I lash back, whether outward or in my mind with disrespectful actions or thoughts?
These are lessons God is teaching me. How about your word of the year? How are you coming along with your word of 2018?
