Dry Bones

“The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones. And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.

Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’ Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.”

Ezekiel 37: 1-14

Wow! Again, wow! I don’t know about you, but this scene would definitely overwhelm me! I would be afraid to pray the prayers he was asked to pray. Fear would freeze my very being. Something so remarkable and I would miss the experience because of fear. I wonder how many times this has happened in my life? Maybe not to this extent, but then again, maybe it has? How many times have I missed the remarkable experiences of our Holy God because of my fear. Or how many times have I missed the remarkable awesome experience because of lack of faith. Or maybe because I just didn’t think to ask God.

I remember once, many years ago I was frantically looking for something. I don’t remember what it was. I know it wasn’t anything important, but it was very frustrating to me because I couldn’t find it. The reason why this situation is still vivid in my mind is because it’s one of the many lessons God has taught me throughout the years. It’s the lesson that’s important here.  I was frantically looking for something and had gotten so angry. In fact I prayed an angry prayer. The nerve I had. I spoke directly towards God and said, “God you know where this is, show me where it is, now.” Yes I know, unthinkable to talk to our Holy Father like that. But guess what? He answered immediately and showed me right where it was. Amazing! Of course I was thankful, and ashamed, and surprised all at the same time. But because God knows my heart, He knew that I was not angry with Him at all. He knew that I knew without a doubt that He knew exactly where  this item was. I’m not recommending or suggesting we treat God like this. And I’m definitely not condoning this attitude. The lesson I’m sharing here is that in my desperation I knew who to go to. I knew that our Heavenly Father knows all. So now, before I get angry and frustrated, I know to pray for God’s wisdom first and trust in Him. He does not always answer the way I feel He should, but by asking Him first, I know He’s in control, not me. Let me explain that statement. He’s always in control, but by me asking Him first, I realize He’s in charge! I realized He was in control because I focused on Him, not myself or the problem. The key word here is “I”. When “I” focuses on “Him” faith grows stronger.

Back to this scripture. How can we be so close to our Heavenly Father that we know when He asks us to trust Him with such an extraordinary and supernatural  request?

If we can get past the crazy shock of this scripture, we will realize that God is using this supernatural answer to prayer as a learning lesson for his people. Using this to teach His people that He is in control and is their Savior. Isn’t that just like God to show us He can raise the dead!? After all He did raise His only son, Jesus. Yes we have an Awesome God!

“A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.”
