As I think back over the past few years, I realize all the lessons I’ve learned. Most were from God directly, lessons only He could teach. He embedded into my soul. Lessons not taught by words alone, but by God’s voice, by a spiritual world we don’t fully understand. Lessons that would’ve been lost if I wasn’t still and didn’t listen. Lessons that took longer for me to learn because I was not still and did not listen. Our Awesome Heavenly Father never gives up on us! He Loves us and holds us.
I remember one lesson, many years ago, on friendship. The thing about the lessons that God teaches us, they are usually very deep and are about so much more than one subject. He showed me how to depend on Him alone. He is my friend, he will fill the lonely void. He is the most trustworthy of all. He will keep all of my secrets. He will keep my feelings and thoughts confidential and will not judge me no matter how awful or selfish they may be. He softly nudges me, reprimands me, guides me to truth, encourages, supports, forgives, and loves me for who I am. He doesn’t turn against me or my loved ones. He doesn’t spread rumors or betray my trust.
Then, when I finally got that, understood that, He uses the same lesson to teach me how to be a friend. Yes, if these are the traits I need in a friend, then they are the same traits I need to be as a friend.
Lessons like these are only heard when we listen. We listen when we are still and in His word, in Prayer, with our eyes, heart, and ears, with our Holy creator. I enjoy sharing lessons that I’ve learned. But I don’t do them justice. Only the indwelling Holy Spirit can really teach us such important lessons.
